- Bitcoin OG and core developer Dashjr claimed that virtually all of his bitcoins were stolen.
- The hackers accessed the developer’s PGP key.
- On November 17, 2022, Dashjr, noted his server had been compromised.
A Bitcoin OG and one of the original Bitcoin’s core developers, Luke Dashjr, has claimed that he virtually lost all his bitcoins after his Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) keys were compromised on December 31, 2022, just before the new year.
PGP key, a common security method, uses two keys to unlock encrypted information.
In a post on Twitter Dashjr contacted the PSA to ask for assistance on January 1, 2023.
“PSA: My PGP key is compromised, and at least many of my bitcoins stolen. I don’t know what to do. Help please.”
In a follow-up tweetDashjr was distressed, asking why he couldn’t reach someone from the FBI/IC3. Then, he followed up with a Twitter that contained a wallet address. This is believed to have been one of the Bitcoin wallets to which some of the stolen BTC was sent.
“What the heck @FBI @ic3 why can’t I reach anyone???
Although Dashjr didn’t disclose the number of bitcoins that were stolen from his wallet on December 31, his wallet address showed four transactions totalling to 216.93 BTC.
November 2022: Dashjr server compromised
Although the developer said that he had no idea as to how hackers gained access to his PGP key, some community members have drawn a possible connection to an earlier claim that Dashjr had made on November 17, 2022, that his server had been compromised by ““new malware/backdoors on the system.”
Dashjr says he discovered the hack after receiving emails from Kraken, Coinbase, and asking about login attempts.
Changpeng Zhao, Binance CEO (CZ), was also interested in the hack and consoled the developer. Twitter saying:
“Sorry to see you lose so much. Our security team was notified to keep an eye on it. We will immediately freeze any item that comes our way. Please let us know if there are any other matters we can assist you with. We deal with these often, and have Law Enforcement (LE) relationships worldwide.”
